Your Guide to Integrated Safety Helmets: The Smarter Approach to Above-the-Neck Protection

Guide Overview   This guide helps health and safety managers, buyers and wearers understand integrated safety helmets. It explains how they compare with traditional individual PPE protection, where they excel, and how to choose the right solution.

What is an integrated helmet?

An integrated helmet combines certified head protection with built-in eye or face protection. Unlike separate PPE, with an integrated system, the eye or face protection is stored within the helmet and can be deployed quickly. This can improve convenience, encourage PPE compliance and simplify equipment management.

What are the potential issues of choosing separate PPE?

Choosing separate PPE can lead to several issues: the most common is the worker losing or forgetting the safety spectacles and therefore being unable to don them when required, putting the worker at risk if the task is carried out without proper PPE and leading to safety issues and non-compliance.

While a traditional combination of a hard hat, visor carrier, and visor can provide effective protection, there are several practical considerations that may impact user comfort, convenience, and long-term wearability: when a visor carrier and visor are attached to a hard hat, they’re mounted at the front of the helmet, and this creates a forward weight bias that can make the assembly feel unbalanced. Also, adding a visor carrier increases the external profile of the helmet, and this makes the helmet feel bulkier, which may increase the risk of snagging on obstacles or equipment in confined spaces.

Also, more components mean more maintenance: the more components involved, the greater the need for inspection, maintenance, replacement, and inventory management.

Finally, when a “conventional” visor is raised, it remains exposed on the outside of the helmet. As a result, the visor may be scratched during handling or storage and exposed to dust, debris, chemicals, or UV radiation. Over time, this may reduce visibility and lead to more frequent visor replacements.

Why do workers fail to wear eye protection?

Common reasons include discomfort, fogging, specs being forgotten, incompatibility with head and hearing protection and frequent transitions between hazardous and non-hazardous tasks.

Fogging is more than just an inconvenience, it can significantly affect both safety and productivity in the workplace. When condensation forms on safety glasses, the lenses become partially or completely obscured, reducing the wearer’s ability to see clearly. This can make it more difficult to identify hazards, read instruments, operate machinery, or perform precision tasks safely. Plus, one of the biggest challenges with fogging is that workers often remove their safety glasses to restore clear vision. This creates a dangerous situation where employees are temporarily exposed to hazards that their safety specs are supposed to protect them from.

Many safety eyewear products claim to offer anti-fog or anti-scratch performance. However, coating quality can vary significantly from one product to another. For this reason, users should look for products with certified anti-fog (“N” marking) and anti-scratch (“K” marking) performance, tested according to the optional requirements of EN ISO 16321, the current standard for occupational eye and face protection.

Quality integrated eye protection helps overcome these challenges by keeping eye protection permanently attached to the helmet, readily available whenever needed, and protected inside the helmet shell when not in use. Combined with the best optical quality (1), anti-fog (N) and anti-scratch (K) lens performance, integrated solutions can improve comfort, maintain clear vision, enhance PPE compliance, and ultimately contribute to a safer workplace.

What are the core benefits of integrated helmets?

Integrated helmets offer a wide range of benefits such as:

  • Faster deployment and ease of training role out
  • Reduced chance of forgetting eyewear or visor
  • Better compatibility and comfort
  • Streamlined PPE management
  • Improved user acceptance
  • Increased productivity
  • Lower risk of damaged or misplaced PPE

Can I wear corrective glasses with an integrated helmet?

Yes. The integrated spectacles and visor systems from MSA are designed to accommodate prescription and corrective eyewear comfortably and securely.

What safety standards are applicable?

This depends on your location and application. Please refer to your site risk assessment and legal requirements in your country for the applicable safety standard information. MSA are also on hand to offer guidance, you can reach out to us directly here.

Can the integrated visors protect me from chemical splashes?

Yes, MSA integrated visors offer protection from chemical splashes. You can review the various chemical compatibility list here. This covers both chemicals listed in EN 14458 and additional chemicals commonly used by industry and MSA customers.

What type do I need if arc flash is a risk?

If arc flash is a risk, the right helmet depends on the level of protection required by your risk assessment.

MSA offers two arc-flash-compatible options within the V‑Gard 950 range:

V‑Gard 950 Class 1 – The V‑Gard 950 non-vented helmet features an integrated GS-ET-29 Class 1 face shield, providing protection against electric arc hazards up to 4 kA. It is designed for electricians and utility workers who need protection from head impact, arc flash, UV radiation, molten metal splash and chemical splashes. The helmet is also electrically insulated to EN 397 (440 V AC) and EN 50365 (1,000 V AC).

V‑Gard 950 Class 2 – For more demanding electrical tasks, the V‑Gard 950 Class 2 incorporates a GS-ET-29 Class 2 integrated face shield and optional extended arc-flash-rated ear and neck protection. The system is certified to provide arc flash protection up to 7 kA, making it suitable for higher-risk electrical environments. Like the Class 1 version, it also meets EN 397 (440 V AC) and EN 50365 (1,000 V AC) electrical insulation requirements.

Can integrated head protection be customized?

When choosing MSA for integrated head protection, there are various ways you can customize your helmets, from the shell colour, to multiple logo placements to integrated PPE to retrofit accessories.

Are MSA integrated helmets suitable for both men and women?

Yes. The MSA V‑Gard 930, V‑Gard 950 and V‑Gard 950 Class 2 helmets are designed to fit a wide range of head shapes and sizes, helping ensure both men and women can achieve a secure, comfortable fit throughout the working day.

At MSA, we recognise that PPE should fit the worker, not the other way around. That’s why our helmets are part of the #PPEthatFits initiative, which promotes inclusive PPE solutions designed to accommodate the diversity of today’s workforce.

V-Gard features that help deliver an inclusive fit include:

  • Intuitive design to better accommodate different head sizes, hair types and profiles.
  • The Fas‑Trac® III suspension system allows quick and precise adjustment for a secure, personalised fit
  • Adjustable nape and height settings to help achieve the correct fit for a wide variety of users
  • Compatibility with other PPE, ensuring workers don’t have to compromise comfort for protection.

A properly fitting safety helmet is essential for protection. A helmet that is too large or too loose can affect balance, stability and comfort, while a well-fitted helmet is more likely to be worn correctly throughout the day.

Are integrated helmets suitable for use in environments with high noise, limited visibility, or extreme temperatures?

Yes, the V-Gard 900 series has been designed to meet the varying demands of industry, including those with high noise, low visibility and varying temperatures. The flexibility of the system and the accessories allow it to be adapted to the environment.

The low-profile design offers a great field of vision and the built in perimeter channel diverts rain and debris away from the wearer.

The sweat-wicking band absorbs moisture, moving it away from the skin. So, instead of sweat dripping down the face where it could impact vision, it is drawn into the band where it can spread out and evaporate more quickly. The sweatband is also washable and replaceable.

The premium anti-fog and anti-scratch technology used in the face and eye protection minimizes fogging and damage which in turn improves vision. The eyewear is also fitted with a special rubber seal to protect the workers from dust and particles entering from below.

An optional lamp holder slot can be added to enable secure attachment of a headband lamp for dark or low visibility areas. Retroreflective strips can also be added to improve visibility of the workers.

The ear defenders are available in both passive and electronic with varying attenuation levels. They simply click in place and can be stowed in the ‘stand-by’ position when not in use.

Cooling liners, winter liners and neck capes are available to provide additional comfort in changing temperatures.

What kind of training is available for supervisors and workers on proper hard hat inspection and maintenance?

MSA makes it easy for both supervisors and workers to understand how to inspect, maintain and maximise the lifespan of their safety helmets. Every V‑Gard helmet is supported by clear user instructions, technical documentation and product literature that outline the correct inspection, cleaning and storage procedures.

If you are looking for something more in-depth, there are a variety of options available, from lunch & learns, toolbox talks, to online training with an expert. The training can be tailored to your needs and will be delivered either via MSA’s authorised channel partners or a member of the MSA team.

Key inspection and maintenance checks include:

  • Inspect the helmet shell, visor, suspension system and chinstrap before and after every use.
  • Look for signs of cracks, breakage, discolouration, chalking, whitening, scratches, fraying or any unusual damage.
  • Replace the helmet immediately if it has sustained a significant impact or shows any signs that its protective performance may be compromised.
  • Replace any scratched, dropped or damaged visors and eye protection components.
  • Clean regularly using mild soapy water and a soft cloth.
  • Avoid solvents, abrasive cleaners or hydrocarbon-based products, as these can damage the materials.
  • Store helmets in a protective bag or enclosed cabinet, away from prolonged exposure to sunlight, moisture, extreme temperatures and contaminants.

Understanding service life is also important. MSA recommends recording the date of first use and monitoring product lifespan:

  • Helmet storage life: up to 3 years under correct storage conditions.
  • Helmet shell service life: 5 years in addition to storage time.
  • Eye and face protection components: 5 years including storage time.

MSA Tip: Regular inspection is one of the simplest ways to help ensure ongoing protection. If a helmet, visor or suspension shows signs of damage, replace the affected component immediately and only use genuine MSA-approved replacement parts.

What is the cost-benefit analysis of investing in premium integrated hard hats with advanced safety features?

While premium integrated helmets have a higher upfront cost, they are typically designed to last up to 5 years, compared with around 3 years for some standard helmets. This longer service life, combined with replaceable components and reduced loss or damage to accessories, can significantly lower PPE replacement costs over time.

For a workforce of 100 employees, extending replacement cycles from 3 to 5 years can reduce helmet purchasing requirements by around 40% over a 15-year period, helping to offset the initial investment.

Integrated systems can also deliver savings beyond the helmet itself. By improving comfort, compatibility, and ease of use, they help increase adoption, reduce downtime, and support faster response to changing hazards.

The business case for investing in effective PPE is strong: the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) estimates that work-related injuries and ill health cost the EU approximately €476 billion annually, equivalent to 3.3% of EU GDP, highlighting the substantial economic impact that can be reduced through effective safety measures.

Whilst premium, integrated helmets have a higher capex, the gap is often outweighed by savings from fewer lost PPE items, lower inventory complexity, reduced administration, longer accessory life, and higher worker adoption which in turn helps to improves compliance and reduces the risk of a PPE-related incident. This is why many organizations evaluate premium integrated helmets on total cost of ownership rather than purchase price alone.
