When incidents, accidents, and catastrophes attributed to climate change occur, first responders may risk their own lives to mitigate the effects of emergencies like wildfires and floods. In such scenarios, they want to select equipment that will help them do their job safely and effectively and could benefit from recent innovations in head protection for firefighters.
July 19th, 2022, was the busiest day for the London Fire Brigade since the Second World War. Unprecedentedly high temperatures turned the UK capital into a tinderbox and the heatwave that swept across Europe that summer was attributed to climate change. Unfortunately, records like this are being broken more frequently. Extreme weather, urban incidents, and natural disasters such as wildfires and floods have all increased over the last few decades, often in places they’ve never happened before. Even if societies can do enough to halt the march of climate change in the future, the scientific consensus is that it will get worse before it gets better.
As the nature of emergencies changes along with the climate, the job of the fire and rescue services is expanding. Yet, their protective equipment is often still expected to be fit for all purposes. Traditional gear may be the best protection in some circumstances, but structural fires only account for around 7% of firefighting activity. The increasing frequency of other types of responses means other solutions may need to be available that are more fit for other purposes.
For urban rescue, wildfires, and even flood rescue operations, consider whether, in addition to fire protection, the equipment also offers the responder a good range of movement without additional weight, the ability to work in low-light conditions, and protection from heat or other specific dangers. The circumstances of each emergency can vary, which means firefighters may want flexibility and modularity. One option for these firefighters is an adaptable, comfortable, lightweight helmet that addresses such challenges.
Wildland firefighters are continuously on the move, crossing miles to contain the blaze and carrying equipment for hours. If it still provides the high-temperature protection they deem appropriate, these firefighters might be able to operate more efficiently and effectively with lighter protective gear.
