The featured LNG company is a major player in India’s dynamic energy sector, handling a significant portion of India’s gas supplies and overseeing the majority of the nation’s LNG imports. The company’s two LNG receiving and regasification terminals have a combined regasification capacity of more than 20 million metric tons per annum (MMTPA). The main Terminal is a cornerstone in meeting India’s growing energy demands.
MSA Safety, in collaboration with our channel partner Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL), dedicated significant effort to introducing our comprehensive gas detection solutions to the customer. A critical element of this strategy was cultivating strong relationships with the Instrumentation Division, ultimately leading to creation of an Approved Vendor List (AVL) that featured MSA and one other vendor.
The primary challenge was mitigating the frequent false alarms generated by the customer’s existing IR Open Path Detectors. These false alarms not only disrupted operations but also posed safety concerns, highlighting the need for a more reliable solution.
The The project focused specifically on the customer’s second LNG Terminal, which was equipped with six IR Open Path Detectors. During our presentations and technical demonstrations, we emphasized the limitations of the current system and showcased how MSA Safety’s Senscient ELDS™ CH4 Laser Open Path Detectors could dramatically reduce the likelihood of false alarms. Our primary objective was to deliver a solution that not only enhanced detection accuracy but also minimized operational disruptions caused by false alarms.
To address customer’s challenges, MSA proposed the Senscient ELDS™ CH4 Laser Open Path Detectors as an optimal replacement for the existing IR detectors. Mr Senthil Kumar, an MSA representative, had previously overseen the installation of ELDS units at one of the customer’s LNG Terminals, where they demonstrated exceptional performance, recording zero false alarms even in adverse conditions like mist and water vapor.
Building on this success, we conducted detailed presentations and technical discussions with the customer’s key stakeholders. The ELDS’s advanced laser-based technology, combined with its proven reliability in similar operational environments, convinced decision-makers of its superiority.
Following the installation of Senscient ELDS™ CH4 Laser Open Path Detectors at the LNG Terminal, the customer experienced a dramatic reduction in operational disruptions linked to false alarms. The advanced detection system consistently delivered precise monitoring, even under challenging environmental conditions such as mist, humidity, and water vapor.
The enhanced reliability of the gas detection system significantly improved plant safety, ensuring alarms were triggered solely by genuine methane leaks. This improvement allowed the customer to maintain uninterrupted operations, reducing unnecessary shutdowns and mitigating safety risks. The outcome not only boosted operational efficiency but also provided peace of mind to the teams managing the terminal.
The successful implementation of our Senscient ELDS™ CH4 Laser Open Path Detectors at the Customer’s LNG Terminal underscores the transformative power of advanced gas detection technologies in critical energy infrastructure. By avoiding false alarms and enabling accurate methane leak detection, the Customer has strengthened both its operational efficiency and its commitment to safety and environmental responsibility.
This case study highlights the importance of selecting tailored gas detection solutions to meet specific operational challenges. MSA’s collaborative approach, combined with cutting-edge technology, delivered tangible benefits, reinforcing our position as a trusted partner in the energy sector.
